Emma Martin – Associate Psychologist
(Bsc, MSc, Dip Youth & Community)
For over 20 years I have worked with adults, young people and families in a variety of settings. I have a degree in Psychology, a Masters in Applied Psychology and I am a qualified Youth Worker and English Teacher to speakers of a foreign language. I work alongside and in conjunction with Dr Jen Greenwood (formerly Dr Jen Wilson) from Derbyshire Psychology.
I am experienced in working with children and young people presenting with issues with anger, school, family, education, anxiety, low self-esteem, confidence, emotional well-being and much more. I also work with young people who have a diagnosis of Autism or Aspergers.
I enable young people to make positive changes in their lives, working to their needs and support requirements, at their pace, setting bite sized, achievable goals, breaking down any barriers they may be faced with. I provide targeted, purposeful interventions that empower and enable the development of the children and young people.
I work in a warm, welcoming and comfortable ‘child friendly’ space, with bean bags, toys, games and art materials to help your child feel at ease.
I use graded exposure, solution focused and cognitive behaviour techniques, aswell as providing a space for the young person to ‘just be’ and talk about things that are playing on their mind and bothering them.
More often than not, young people with anxiety function and continue through school, employment and relationships without event. However, for some young people support may be needed to help them deal positively with their anxieties.
Young people may become anxious in social situations, they may begin to refuse to go to school (school refusers). Their anxiety may manifest in forms of anger, whereby they may lash out at people or objects. They may develop behaviours under the condition known as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), where they may wash their hands more frequently, or make sure routines are carried out in a particular order.
Anxiety can result in low mood, low self-esteem and/or low confidence.
Schools and other agencies offer support and advice, however this may not be the focused and dedicated support children and young people require.
Together with a Clinical Psychologist we offer an initial assessment in order to formulate a programme of support to best assist the children, young people and families we work with.
